Think you need more storage space?
Need more storage space? Maybe you just need less stuff…
Some of my clients are keen to find storage space solutions for their stuff. For those struggling, I remind them that my job isn’t about making them throw everything away and halving their possessions. Whilst there are benefits to adopting just a little of that approach, enjoying what they already have and finding the ways to store it to suit their lifestyle is key.
Clients often contact me because they feel overrun with their possessions.
Frustrated by the resulting lack of storage space and headaches it can cause. They’ve no idea where to start on getting it organised. In a session clients usually do end up getting rid of some things – be it to charity, family or recycling – but many simply find that with a bit of tweaking here and there, moving things into different areas or rooms, we can create a storage space that works for them.
(Some) Reasons clients why have too much stuff;
- Online ordering – it’s easy to fulfil a need/want with the click of a button. Amazon delivers the next day.
- Not removing things from their space – it might be useful one day, it cost me good money, I inherited it, it’s sentimental.
- Busy lifestyle/household – leads to unfinished projects, distracted with other tasks, not making time to get things sorted.
- Finding a great item of clothing – then buying it in 3 different colours but only ever wearing one. The wardrobe becomes full.
- Abandoned interests – sport, craft, hobbies that once were ‘the thing’ to do become forgotten interests.
- Cluttered storage spaces – can’t find what they need quickly, so end up purchasing more of the same.
So how do we change all of this and create a storage space that works?
It’s starts with needing to really dig deep into why you end up with so much stuff. Once you’re a bit clearer on how things end up becoming clutter in your storage space it will be easier to work out to resolve it.
- Is it time to give your wallet a break and resist the urge to spend on more? More stuff to fit in, to organise, to declutter somewhere down the line. Not only will it save you some cash, it will allow you to have a proper look at the things you already have in your storage space and enjoy them.
- Can you come to some agreement about how much of a particular ‘thing’ you keep? Children’s artwork for instance – limit to 3-5 pieces for each age group instead of every weekly drawing.
- Find ways to make money back from the stuff you have; selling clothes on Vinted, larger items on local marketplace or specialist retailers (depending on what they are).
- Create more logical storage spaces that work for you and your family. Keep like items together –fitness gear, baking items, etc, and things needed when leaving the house near to the front door.
- There are always ways to utilise your existing storage space in a different way. That’s where a fresh pair of eyes can come in useful – not only to see things from a different perspective, but to suggest solutions for you to try that you may never have considered before.
You don’t have to stick to a set of rules, so experiment and see what does & doesn’t work for you!
